When brewing specialty coffee, the “secondary distribution grid” is a design element that is often mentioned, but few people fully understand its purpose. It is located inside the coffee machine holder, in the coffee basket, directly below the brewing group and is a thin precision sintered stainless steel filter. The main function of the mesh is to ensure that hot water flows evenly through the pressed coffee tablet and prevent the channeling effect, where water quickly flows only through certain areas, causing uneven extraction. Thanks to the uniform arrangement of fine pores, the secondary distribution grid redistributes the water flow, increasing the stability of extraction and the richness of the flavor of the drink. This is especially true for household semi-automatic coffee machines: standard factory meshes usually have insufficient pore density. Replacing with a high-density sintered filter mesh significantly improves the quality of the espresso.
